History of Video Gaming
The history of gaming dates back to the early 1950s with the first electronic video games being created as an experiment with computers and electronics rather than an actual game to play. One of the early games was called “Tennis for Two” which released in 1958 by physicist William Higinbotham on a analog computer to entertain visitors to his lab. The 1970s marked the beginning of commercial gaming with arcades opening and arcade machines with games like Pong which came out in 1972 by Atari, brought gaming to the public eye. Finally, gaming was turning from a small laboratory experiment to a commercial business.
Consoles such as the Atari 2600 brought gaming to the household, introducing cartridge-based consoles. In the 1980’s, Nintendo and Sega became household names releasing games like Mario and Sonic who are still household names today. This eventually went from 2D games to 3D games in the 90’s with the N64 and the PlayStation 1 which revolutionized gaming forever. This went into the 2000’s which saw the graphics of these games greatly improve and spread everywhere to phones, virtual reality, and modern editions of the old consoles like the Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X. Today gaming has turned into a commercial powerhouse with millions of people playing video games every day.
